There a many tools that can aid you with patterning but one can begin practice with just a few simple tools.
Necessities:
- Measuring tape: One of the most essential to patterning is the measuring tape. For
- Metal/wood ruler: Needed for tailoring garments to your exact measurements.
- See through ruler: Useful for difficult measurements and determining seam allowance.
- Pattern paper: Grid paper can help with exact measurements but plain white paper, butcher paper or even newspaper can be used.
- Scissors/rotary cutter: Use only scissors made for paper on your patterns. If you use your shears they will dull faster.
Advanced:
- French curve: A curved ruler most used for in seams, shoulder/sleeve caps.
- Dress form: These take many forms whether they be adjustable, one size, or including an arm or leg. Most useful for tailors who frequently create garments for others and must alter the measurements to the dress form.
